TOTUR : KEVIN SCULLY
Kevin Scully and Threka ran a very successful painting holiday together in 2013. Kevin trained at Wimbledon School of Art and has exhibited widely and travelled extensively. He leads painting holidays and art courses in the UK and abroad. His vast experience allows him to teach in all mediums. He especially enjoys sharing his knowledge with others and his work encompasses a wide range of subject matter where he concentrates on working from direct observation to produce paintings that contain just the bare essentials, and devoid of too much unnecessary detail. He is enthusiastic and creative, using demonstrations and one-to-one tuition to help students gain confidence and develop as individuals.

By early evening we will be ready to come together for an informal introduction, short tutorial, and tips and tricks for making the most of this painting holiday in Kerala. The best way to see The Backwaters is from the water, so we soak it all up on a boat trip along local canals. We will see houseboats, fishing boats, ferry canoes, women washing clothes and cooking pots, birds, and a tangle of tropical plants. Learn how to include people in your paintings, and how to capture the sunset – be quick, dusk comes very quickly. Kevin will offer demonstrations of technique and there is always an informal critique of the day’s events. After a 3-hour boat cruise, a traditional Kerala lunch at a boatman’s house will be provided on a bed of banana leaves.
Day 03 > DAY 05 - 07 (05 - 07 DEC 2025)
Munnar is a town of environmental purity situated at the confluence of three mountain streams. It is surrounded by about 30 tea estates, among the highest in the world. At 1,500 metres, this vibrant small town is set amidst lush green tea gardens. We can walk into Munnar from our hotel and move around with our sketchbooks capturing a variety of subjects; a temple, Churchill Bridge, Main Street, and the busy vegetable market to learn the art of quick sketching.
Our painting locations reflect the fresh greens of this tea-growing region. We take on the challenge of painting all that green and looking more closely at rhythm and pattern. At Seven Malai, a pretty village with a river running through it, we spend a few hours painting the plantation workers colourful cottages, in the shade of large trees. There is time to rest and recuperate between excursions and evenings are free to walk around in the town. As an optional extra, we visit a local school of Keralan cuisine to watch a cooking demonstration before dining on the delicious results!
Day 04 > DAY 08 - 10 (08 to 10 DEC 2025)
The palm-green commercial town of Kerala has one of the finest natural harbours in the world. This old European settlement with its many wonderful buildings reminds us of its rich colonial past. After restoring ourselves, we take a walk to see the glorious Chinese fishing nets, stalls, and shops on the sea front, before watching the sun dip into the Arabian Sea once more. We will have the opportunity to experience the distant views of Fort Cochin on the opposite side of the estuary. Varied subjects to sketch include fishing huts, fishermen mending their nets and their colourful boats, a wonderful old synagogue and the burial place of Vasco da Gama, lovely shops for artefacts, antiques, jewellery or saris, cafes, waterside restaurants, St. Francis Church, the Dutch Palace, and Jew Street! There is an option to watch a traditional Kathakali dance, keeping an eye on the artists who apply the very distinctive and colourful makeup! An informal ‘exhibition’ will be organized on the last evening of your Holiday. It’s fun to recollect the journey we have been on, and the portfolio of work you will have amassed.
