Susanna Bailey first traveled as an artist when she won the Nancy Balfour Scholarship during her post graduate years at the Slade School.This fuelled her love of drawing and painting and has taken her all over the world as a tutor, and as a working artist. Susanna is a colourist who works in several media, specialising in watercolour. Charismatic, popular and fun, she believes that careful teaching covering sketching, colour, composition, and the best use of available materials, will lead to real confidence, and wonderful paintings. Her approach is to give a structured week through demonstration, and one-to-one tuition. She enjoys sharing her love of art history.

Day 00 (14 Mar 2026) | England to Vietnam

Travel from England to Vietnam (Hanoi International Airport)

Day 01 (15 Mar 2026) | Hanoi

Arrival at Hanoi (Noi Bai International Airport) We will pick you up and transfer to our hotel in Hanoi. Today we will rest and relax at the hotel before gathering for supper in the evening.

Day 2 ( 16 Mar 2026) | Hanoi

Explore the charm of Hanoi as you visit some of its most iconic landmarks. Begin your day with the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first university, followed by a visit to the grand Hanoi Opera House and the historic Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Continue to the Ho Chi Minh complex and unique One Pillar Pagoda, a symbol of the city’s spiritual heritage.

In the afternoon, enjoy a painting session with Susanna Bailey, where you can capture Hanoi’s beauty.

Day 3 (17 Mar 2026) | Hanoi

Begin your day in Hanoi with a peaceful morning by Hoàn Kiếm Lake, where you’ll have time to sketch or paint the tranquil scenery and daily life unfolding around the water. After lunch, return to the hotel to relax before joining an afternoon painting session, allowing you to deepen your creative expression under guided inspiration.

Later in the day, enjoy a walking tour through Hanoi’s bustling Old Quarter, where you can explore a lively local market filled with vibrant sights and sounds. To round off the evening, choose to attend a traditional water puppet show – a uniquely Vietnamese cultural performance that brings folk tales to life.

Day 04 (18 Mar 2026) | Hanoi to Mai Chau

Hanoi To Mai Chau  (3.30 Hrs drive)

Depart Hanoi and enjoy a scenic  drive to the peaceful valley of Mai Chau, known for its lush green landscapes and vibrant ethnic minority culture.

Upon arrival, check in to your accommodation nestled among rice fields and stilt houses. Take some time to relax and soak in the fresh mountain air.

In the afternoon, you’re free to explore the surrounding area at your own pace – wander through local villages, admire the traditional wooden homes, or simply enjoy the serene views of terraced fields and distant hills.

Day 05 (19 Mar 2026) | Mai Chau

Spend the morning exploring the charming ethnic villages of Ban Lac and Pom Coọng, nestled in the picturesque Mai Chau Valley. These traditional Thai villages are known for their stilt houses, vibrant textiles, and warm hospitality. As you stroll through the quiet lanes, you’ll have the chance to interact with local residents, learn about their daily life, and observe traditional crafts like weaving. It’s a peaceful and culturally rich experience that offers an authentic glimpse into rural life in northern Vietnam.

In the afternoon, return to your accommodation for a painting workshop with Susanna Bailey.

Day 06 (20 Mar 2026) | Mai Chau

Enjoy a peaceful and inspiring day in Mai Chau dedicated to painting. Spend the morning and afternoon at your hotel, surrounded by stunning views of rice paddies, mountains, and traditional stilt houses. With plenty of time and space to focus on your artwork, it’s the perfect setting to capture the essence of rural Vietnam on canvas. Let the tranquil atmosphere and natural beauty fuel your creativity throughout the day.

Later this afternoon, take a short trip into town to visit the Thai Ethnic Museum, where you can learn more about the rich culture, customs, and history of the local Thai people.

Day 07 (21 Mar 2026) | Mai Chau to Pu Luong

 

Mai Chau to Pu Luong   (1.30 Hrs drive)

Depart from Mai Chau for a scenic drive to Pu Luong, known for its lush mountains and terraced rice fields. Upon arrival, take a short trek to Hieu Village, where you’ll discover the beautiful Hieu Waterfall, a hidden gem cascading through the forest – a perfect spot to relax and enjoy nature. After some time exploring and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere, transfer back to your hotel in Pu Luong for check-in. The rest of the day is at your leisure to unwind and take in the serene surroundings. 

Day 08 (22 Mar 2026) | Pu Luong

Today, immerse yourself in the cultural richness of Pu Luong with a visit to the charming ethnic villages of Lan Trong and Lan Ngoai. Enjoy a peaceful walk through terraced rice fields and bamboo-lined paths as you explore these traditional Thai villages, where time seems to slow down. Visit a local family renowned for their hand-weaving craft. You’ll have the opportunity to observe the intricate weaving process and learn about the significance of textile- making in daily life. It’s a meaningful experience that offers authentic insight into the region’s heritage and warm hospitality.

Day 09 (23 Mar 2026) | Pu Luong

Today is a flexible and inspiring day in the peaceful setting of Pu Luong Nature Reserve. You may choose to spend the day painting at the hotel, capturing the stunning landscapes and tranquil village scenes from the comfort of your surroundings. Or if you prefer a bit of gentle adventure, an easy trek through nearby rice terraces and forest trails offers a closer look at local life and nature. Alternatively, join a hands-on workshop to learn about traditional bamboo furniture making – an engaging way to connect with the region’s rich craft heritage (need to be confirmed ahead to prepare). Whether you choose creativity, exploration, or cultural immersion, the day promises to be both relaxing and enriching.

Day 10 (24 Mar 2026) | Pu Luong to Ninh Binh

Pu Luong to Ninh Binh (03.00Hrs Drive)

After breakfast, depart from the serene landscapes of Pu Luong and enjoy a beautiful drive to Ninh Binh, often referred to as “Halong Bay on land” for its dramatic limestone karsts and peaceful rivers. Upon arrival, check in at your hotel and take the rest of the day to relax and enjoy the hotel’s facilities. Whether it’s a refreshing swim, a spa treatment, or simply unwinding in the lush surroundings, the afternoon is yours to rest and recharge before exploring Ninh Binh further.

Day 11 (25 Mar 2026) | Ninh Binh – Trang An boat trip

 

Start your day with a peaceful boat ride through the stunning Trang An Landscape Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its towering limestone cliffs, serene waterways, and hidden caves. Along the way, you’ll visit ancient temples and the historic site of Vu Lam, once a strategic military base during the Tran dynasty. After lunch, return to the hotel for a relaxing afternoon painting session with Susanna Bailey. Surrounded by Ninh Binh’s natural beauty, this is the perfect setting to capture the tranquil scenery on canvas. 

Day 12 (26 Mar 2026) | Ninh Binh

Begin the day with a visit to the grand Bai Dinh Pagoda, a renowned pilgrimage site and one of the largest temple complexes in Southeast Asia. Built in 2003, the pagoda is home to towering Buddha statues, peaceful courtyards, and sweeping views of the surrounding countryside – an inspiring setting for sketching and soaking in the spiritual atmosphere. After exploring and sketching in the temple grounds, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, return to the hotel where you can continue with a painting session or simply relax and enjoy the tranquil surroundings

Day 13 (27 Mar 2026) | Ninh Binh to Halong Bay Cruise

Ninh Binh  to Halong cruise (3.00Hrs)

Depart Ninh Binh in the morning for Halong Bay, where your next adventure awaits. Upon arrival, board the luxurious Dragon Legend Cruise and enjoy a welcome drink as you check in to your comfortable cabin. A delicious lunch will be served on board as the cruise sets sail through the breathtaking limestone seascape of Bai Tu Long Bay, a quieter and equally stunning part of Halong.

In the afternoon, take part in onboard activities, including a Vietnamese cooking demonstration, or simply relax on the sun deck and soak in the views. This is the perfect way to unwind and experience the natural beauty of the bay.

Day 14 (28 Mar 2026) | Departure from Hanoi

This morning, check out from the cruise and begin your 2.5-hour transfer back to Hanoi. Before heading to the airport, enjoy a bit of free time in the city for some last-minute shopping or to soak in the vibrant street life one final time. In the evening, catch your flight back to England. Like all unforgettable journeys, this vacation comes to an end with a heart full of memories, new friendships, and countless stories to share from your time in beautiful Vietnam.
